The burgeoning issue of romance scams has led to millions being tricked into sending money under the guise of a budding romance.
Understanding Romance Scams
Romance scams often begin with a seemingly innocent encounter on a dating website or app. The scammer quickly moves the conversation to private channels such as email, phone calls, or messaging apps, claiming to have found true love. Despite professing their love, they often concoct stories of being far away due to work commitments or military service. The scam soon escalates to requests for money, citing reasons ranging from plane tickets, emergency medical procedures, to urgent financial troubles.
These scammers create elaborate fake profiles and invest significant time in building trust, often communicating multiple times a day. Once a substantial emotional bond is formed, they exploit this trust by concocting a crisis and asking for financial help.
The Cost of Love Scams
In 2021, a staggering $547 million was reported lost to romance scams, marking an 80% increase from the previous year. These scams have evolved, with scammers increasingly demanding payment via gift cards or cryptocurrencies, making it harder for victims to recover their lost funds.
Recognizing Scammer Tactics
Scammers adapt their narratives to suit their target, claiming inability to meet in person due to overseas commitments. Requests for money soon follow, appealing to the victim's sense of empathy and love. Scammers prefer payment methods that are difficult to trace and recover, such as wire transfers, gift cards, and cryptocurrencies, pressuring their victims into making quick decisions.
Protecting Yourself from Romance Scams
The golden rule to avoid falling victim to a romance scam is straightforward: never send money or gifts to someone you have not met in person. If you suspect you're being scammed, it's crucial to:
Cease all communication with the person immediately.
Consult with trusted friends or family members.
Conduct online searches combining the person’s job title with the word “scammer” to find similar stories.
Perform a reverse image search of the person’s profile picture to check for inconsistencies.
Reporting Romance Scams
Victims of romance scams are urged to contact their banks or the companies involved to attempt to recover their funds. Additionally, these incidents should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the platform where the scammer was encountered.
